Part 1

For the past few months I have been building up a DSLR camera rig for making video. This week I am concentrating on controlling a motorised slider (a really nice affordable DIY kit from ratrig.com), a motorised pan/tilt head (Bescor MP-101) and a focusing servo for my main manual lens, a Samyang 35mm T1.5.

Simple MIDI Controller with Attiny85

Today I successfully hacked together a USB-MIDI controller with 3 knobs for an instrument I'm building using an Atmel ATTiny85 IC.  I'm posting code and instructions here mainly as a reminder to myself, but also to aid anyone else trying to do this. I spent a couple of days researching before I figured out the correct way to go about it.

Last summer Touchin' Bass record label boss Andrea Parker invited me to write a track for an interesting sounding project that launched at Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2014. I've spent the last week designing a small pickup winder for my workshop. This is my fourth design. I've learned a lot about mechanisms, Arduino, sensors and fabrication through making these machines, and to date haven't made nearly as many pickups as I would like due to the winding machines not working as they were supposed to. All in all, winding pickups is fiddly and frustrating, but it's so satisfying when after all the hard graft you have something that works.

Mid 2013 I took the plunge and invested in a small CNC router. It took a long time to figure out how to set it up, the relationship between the different software stages, and the practicalities of cutting different materials. For months it was 95% set up but something wasn't working and I couldn't figure it out. Through a google search for local CNC machinists whose brains I could pick I discovered a FabLab was opening in my new city of residence, Limerick. I got in touch and Michael, the co-ordinator at FabLab came to my workshop and within minutes identified the problem and got the machine working.
